Pizza sizes

A large pizza is usually 14 inches across and cut into 8 slices. A medium is about 12 inches, also 8 slices; a small is 8 to 10 inches with 6; and an extra-large is about 16 inches.

Pizzerias size and cut their pies differently, so the sources below don’t all agree. Where they don’t, we say so.

Across: the diameter most sources give, with the range USDA FoodData Central’s food survey uses for that size. Slices are how our calculator counts them, and “grown-ups fed” counts 3 slices each, the rule of thumb The Kitchn and Food Republic give too. Your pizzeria may cut differently.

“Pizza” is the area of a round pie that size, worked out from the diameter. A 16-inch pizza is 14% wider than a 14-inch one but has 31% more pizza, because area grows with the square of the diameter. More slices don’t mean more pizza: the same pie cut into 12 pieces is just smaller pieces.

How big is a large pizza?

Usually 14 inches across. Taste of Home calls a 14-inch circle the standard large and Food Republic says the same, and Pizza Hut’s large is 14 inches on its own website. USDA’s food survey files a large pizza as 13 to 15 inches. Not everyone agrees: The Kitchn says a large is sometimes 14 inches and other times 18, and WebstaurantStore, which sells pizza boxes to restaurants, sizes its large box at 16 to 18 inches. Papa John’s doesn’t give a diameter for its large at all. If the inches matter, ask the pizzeria.

How many slices in a medium pizza?

Usually 8. Taste of Home and Food Republic both give 8 slices for a 12-inch medium, Pizza Today says most food trucks cut their 12-inch pizzas into 8, and Papa John’s cuts its medium into 8. That’s the same count as a large, so a medium has smaller slices, not fewer. We count 8 in the calculator too. The one outlier is WebstaurantStore’s medium box, 12 to 14 inches, which it says holds 8 to 10.

How many people does a 16-inch pizza feed?

About 3 to 4 grown-ups. By area, a 16-inch pizza is 31% more than a 14-inch large, which Taste of Home says serves 2 to 3; that works out to 3 to 4. Our calculator counts 12 slices in an extra-large and 3 for a grown-up, which feeds 4. For a crowd, the pizza calculator does the counting: pick XL and put in your headcount.

Is one large pizza more than two mediums?

No. A 14-inch large is about 154 square inches of pizza, and two 12-inch mediums are about 226, which is 47% more. Even a 16-inch extra-large (201 square inches) is less than two mediums. So when a deal offers two mediums for about the price of one large, the two mediums are more pizza.
