How we got to 5

11 grown-ups at 3 slices each need 33 slices. We add 10% so nobody’s left eyeing the last one, which makes 37. A large pizza has 8 slices, which is what Pizza Hut and Papa John’s cut theirs into, so 37 ÷ 8 = 4.63, and we round up to 5.

How to split 5 pizzas

We’d go 2 cheese, 2 pepperoni and 1 veggie or specialty. Cheese is the safe bet for kids and picky eaters, and the veggie pizzas cover anyone who skips meat. If you know your crowd, move pizzas between the three; the total stays the same.

Ordering for a soccer team, a family get-together or a small office

A soccer team after practice eats whatever is in front of it, so have the boxes open and the napkins out before the team comes off the field; 5 pizzas go in about the time it takes to find everyone’s water bottle.

For a family get-together of 11, ask the host what the kids will and won’t eat, then move them to the Kids box above: every kid counts 1 slice less than a grown-up. For a small office, one order of 5 on the company card, delivered to reception with a name on it, beats eleven people walking to lunch.

A few, probably: 5 large pizzas are 40 slices, and 11 people at 3 each eat 33, which leaves 7.
